CSA Launches PhD Studentship Programme in Europe CSA Calls for University Participation in PhD and Postgraduate Studentship Programme for Security and Privacy in Cloud Computing

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND – June 28, 2012 – The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) today announced a PhD studentship programme in the context of its Education and Training activities. CSA will partner with universities and research centers in Europe to recruit talented PhD researchers in the area of cloud security and privacy. It will connect PhD students with industry partners from CSA’s corporate members, to enhance research quality and deployability, while at the same time providing career development opportunities. The first round will recruit up to 3 PhD students, starting November 1, 2012, offering a 3 year full time contract covering PhD tuition and examination fees for the same period. Participation in the CSA PhD programme for security and privacy in cloud computing is open to any university or research center with research activity in cloud computing security and privacy. The selection of academic partners will be made on the basis of research excellence and relevance to CSA’s research agenda, as well as project timelines and other criteria established by the CSA. Students will pursue their PhD studies within CSA’s portfolio of European cloud security research activities. “This is a tremendous opportunity for universities and individual PhD candidates to get involved in the rapidly changing area of cloud security research,” said Daniele Catteddu, EMEA Managing Director for the Cloud Security Alliance. “We are looking for talented researchers who are interested in working on academic research with a strong practical focus. The research will involve close collaboration with CSA’s industrial partners, providing exciting prospects for further career development.” Universities can submit a brief expression of interest online by Friday, July 13th. CSA EMEA contributes to an exciting portfolio of scientific research projects with partners across Europe. CSA’s portfolio of projects includes national and EU funded research projects (Helix Nebula Science Cloud, A4Cloud, Cumulus and Cirrus). CSA EMEA’s research in the projects includes trust enabling mechanisms, assurance and certification frameworks, security policy automation, privacy and accountability. Selected candidates will work within a small, fast-growing team of researchers distributed across Europe, and will work closely with CSA team staff and volunteers in Europe and Asia. The CSA is looking for PhD and postgraduate candidates with the following experience and skills:

  • Very high technical competence and strong academic record. BA/BS in Computer Science preferred.
  • Strong aptitude for information security research within an academic environment at doctoral level.
  • Exposure to large scale distributed systems.
  • Development experience preferably within a cloud environment.
  • Knowledge and experience of information security certification and audit mechanisms.
  • Strong sense of accountability, ownership for end-to-end project lifecycle and sound knowledge of project management.
