Today, I want to tell a story of data security posture management (DSPM).
The tale of DSPM is about a representative company that faced challenges in securing its sensitive data in the cloud.
Once upon a time, there was a company named XYZ Inc. which relied heavily on cloud storage to store their data, including their confidential and sensitive data. They trusted their cloud service provider to keep their data safe and secure.
The Hack
Then one day, Mr. Black Hat managed to uncover a publicly exposed cloud account and access the data in that account, which included sensitive company secrets, customer data, and even financial information.
Mr. Black Hat then posted the sensitive customer, company and financial data files on a public website, making them available for anyone to download. The news of the data breach spread like wildfire, and XYZ Inc. faced immense public backlash.
XYZ Inc. had nowhere else to go, but to hire a team of security experts to investigate the breach. But that’s just the response part of the story, they also knew they needed a way to prevent this type of incident in the future. Enter DSPM. If only they had DSPM to save the day before Mr. Black Hat found their most sensitive data.
How could DSPM have prevented this incident?
Because of how data proliferates in the cloud it’s almost impossible to know what data you have, where, with legacy, manual, or other technology approaches. Only with DSPM can you discover all of your cloud data, determine when it’s in violation of security policies (such as a publicly exposed account with sensitive data), and prioritize those violations for remediation. Public exposure of sensitive data is prevented, continuous compliance is upheld, the data attack surface decreases, and agile data security in the cloud is delivered!
Wow, DSPM, you really CAN save the day! (swoon)
XYZ Inc. certainly learned their lesson and live the DSPM life now. And, now years have passed since XYZ Inc. last had a breach. They have many more customers and partners that love working with them and are a trusted cloud service provider.
XYZ Inc. lived happily ever after. The end.
