CSA Turns 15: Kicking Off the Next 85 Years of Cloud Security Excellence
Written by Jim Reavis, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, CSA.

As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), I'm compelled to marvel at our journey from ambitious upstarts to a critical global stakeholder for cybersecurity. Our goal, audacious as it may sound, is not just to leave a mark on the cloud security landscape, but to etch our name into it for a century. Yes, you read that right: CSA aims to be around for 100 years, ensuring that even our great-great-grandchildren know their way around cloud security (and possibly telling tales of how their ancestors saved the cloud from its teething troubles).

Our story began with a vision that seemed as vast as the cloud itself: to secure the cloud for every user, across every digital nook and cranny of the globe. Kicking off with the industry's first portfolio of cloud security best practices in 2009, we set the tone for what was to become a revolution. Not long after, we introduced the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK) in 2010, crafting the first-ever professional credential in the field and setting the stage for many to claim, "Yes, I do indeed know my clouds beyond just their shapes."

One of our proudest moments came when we served as the launchpad for the U.S. Federal Government’s Cloud First Strategy at the CSA Summit in 2011. It was a clear signal that when it comes to cloud security, CSA was the go-to expert—even for those who operate at the highest levels of decision-making. And let’s not forget the launch of the CSA Security, Trust, Assurance and Risk (STAR) program in 2011, a pioneering program that asked cloud providers to essentially "show their security cards," fostering a new era of transparency and trust.

Our innovation engine didn’t stop there. From championing the Software-Defined Perimeter in 2014, setting the stage for our subsequent Zero Trust research, to our foray into securing the ever-expanding universe of the Internet of Things in 2015, CSA has consistently been at the forefront of security evolution. And yes, we even dipped our toes into the enigmatic waters of quantum-safe computing and blockchain security, because, as they say, "Why rest on your laurels when you can secure the future?"

Fast forward to the recent past, and you'll find CSA not just keeping pace with emerging technologies, but sprinting ahead. The launch of the Certificate of Cloud Auditing Knowledge (CCAK) in 2021, in partnership with ISACA, and the 2023 release of the Certificate of Competence in Zero Trust (CCZT), are clear indicators that we're serious about our 100-year plan. We're not just reacting to the present; we're preempting the future. Our latest endeavors, including the first release of ChatGPT guidance in 2023 and the AI Safety Initiative, are about ensuring that even as AI becomes the heart of the cloud and integral to our lives, security isn't left playing catch-up.

As we raise our glasses to 15 years of CSA, we smile at our early days, when "cloud" was more likely to conjure thoughts of meteorology than technology in most minds. Our journey from those days of explaining, "No, we don’t predict weather," to setting the global standards in cloud security, is a testament to the power of vision, determination, and not taking ourselves too seriously.

To all our members, partners, and the broader cloud security community, I extend a hearty thank you. Your expertise, enthusiasm, and tireless volunteerism has made us who we are. As we look towards the horizon, filled with quantum computers, AI developments, and yet-unnamed technologies, I am confident that together, we will continue to safeguard the cloud, ensuring that CSA remains a beacon of trust and security for the next 85 years and beyond.

Here's to making history, securing the future, and occasionally, enjoying a good laugh along the way.
