Tata Communications started out as VSNL, an Indian government-owned utility company. Investments by the Tata Group resulted in the acquisition of subsea cable systems and other international assets (such as Teleglobe and Tyco Global Network) that allowed Tata Communications to compete with, and eventually surpass, global Voice and Carrier competitors.
